Misophonia Treatment Session (Part 2: Effective Trigger Management, Custom Muscle Relaxation Training, and Use of the Trigger Tamer App)

In-person

About the Session

Part 1: Theory of Misophonia and Counterconditioning

In this experiential session, Dozier will share the presentation he gives to individuals he works with who have misophonia. He will explain the theory of misophonia as a conditioned (acquired) aversive physical-and-emotional reflex disorder, help participants identify their Initial Physical Reflex, and describe how the brain stem develops and eliminates physical reflexes through Pavlovian conditioning and counterconditioning. He will also discuss practical counterconditioning techniques to help you create a plan for moving forward. Dozier recommends that individuals install the free Misophonia Reflex Finder app to help identify their Initial Physical Reflex during this session.

Part 2: Effective Trigger Management, Custom Muscle Relaxation Training, and Use of the Trigger Tamer App

This experiential session focuses on creating custom noise mixes for management and custom sessions with the Misophonia Muscle Relaxation app. You’ll learn the theory behind Progressive Muscle Relaxation training and neuroplasticity, then develop a counterconditioning plan using either audio recordings or the Misophonia Trigger Tamer app. Before the session, install the Misophonia Muscle Relaxation app and the White Noise Lite app (pink icon or the $1 blue icon) on your device. These tools will help you create real-life counterconditioning experiences that can reduce, rather than increase, the severity of your reactions to everyday triggers. If you have not attended Part 1, get the code from Tom and install the Misophonia Trigger Tamer app before this session.

Individuals who attend either session will receive a free promo code for the Misophonia Trigger Tamer app (availability limited to 100 codes).

About the Presenter

Tom Dozier, MS, BCBA, is a behaviorist who has researched and provided treatment for misophonia since 2012 and authored, "Understanding and Overcoming Misophonia, A Conditioned Aversive Reflex Disorder," along with 10 journal articles. He conducted two experimental misophonia studies that investigated the conditioned physical and emotional reflex responses of misophonia, providing support for the theory that the misophonic response includes both conditioned physical reflex and emotional reflex responses. Dozier developed Relaxation and Counterconditioning Therapy as a behavioral treatment for misophonia, and he has provided this treatment to hundreds of individuals either in-person and by telehealth.
